Lap Spay at TAPS

Follow along as we perform a lap spay here at Toronto Animal Procedures & Surgery.  Prior to the surgery date, a consultation (with pre-operative blood work, if not already done) will be conducted to address any questions or concerns.

01

Pre-operative Exam

The morning starts with a warm welcome and lots of belly rubs before we do a pre-operative examination.  This ensures there are no new concerns prior to surgery.

02

Sedation and Induction

A small poke is given for sedation before an IV catheter is placed for anesthetic induction.  Patients are maintained under anesthesia via gas anesthetic through a breathing tube.

03

Surgical Preparation

Next step is to prepare the surgical site to ensure a sterile area for the procedure.  Although we use very small incision(s) for the surgery, we do have to shave a large area.  The hair will grow back -- we promise!

04

Surgical Procedure

Transfer from our treatment area to the surgical suite for the lap spay!  The surgery itself will take 30-60min dependent on the case and what needs to be done.

05

Post-operative recovery

Recovery is very smooth and patients often wake up like nothing happened!  A recovery suit or the infamous "cone of shame" is used to prevent and protect the surgical site. The lap spay is a day procedure, and patients can go home later in the afternoon or early evening.

3-Day Recheck

We will usually see the patient again 3-5 days after surgery to ensure everything is healing according to plan! Until the recheck, leash walks for bathroom breaks only.
